This 66-year-old has worked at McDonald’s for 50 years: ‘I never thought it would be my forever job’
CNBC ^ | 5 Nov 2023 | Morgan Smith

In the 1970s, the coolest job you could have was flipping burgers at McDonald’s.

At least according to Paul Hendel...

Still, he felt conflicted. Hendel asked his dad for advice before accepting the offer at McDonald’s. That conversation, he says, “changed the trajectory of my career.”

“We were out to dinner, and I mentioned the offer from Hunt, and my dad’s first question — I’ll never forget it — was, ‘Do you like what you do?’” says Hendel. “And I said, ‘Yeah, I really love it.’ And he goes, ‘Do you think you’re good at it?’ And I said, ‘Well I just got promoted!’”

He continues: “Then he said, ‘Paul, if that’s what you like to do, and you’re good at it, stick with it because I’m not crazy about my job or commuting into Manhattan every day.’ I realized, then, that work isn’t just about getting a paycheck every week. I’m so glad he gave me the advice he did, because I still love what I do.”

Mr. Morgan sure set his sights low. “

Hendel, not Morgan

I haven’t had a fast-food burger in decades, but this is a great story! It’s funny how we make plans for life not knowing that life sometimes makes plans for us.

Yes! DFW, can you just imagine someone trying to manage ANY public business, to the standards and discipline that this guy instilled, in today’s climate of workers?? The kids would quit or lock him in the freezer. This movie illustrates what a sad jungle we have become.

I once heard, maybe it was on Jeopardy, that one in seven American workers had their first job at McDonald’s.

Another Walmart CEO’s first Walmart position was unloading trucks when he was in high school.

My first job was a grocery bagboy. I got promoted to stock clerk.

Morgan is the author of the article, not the guy who worked at MD. That’s why I wrote “Author” - to avoid all confusion.

But “Morgan” is a gal, so SHE set HER sights low. I stand corrected on that.

McD’s said 1 in 8 had the McD experience but I really doubt it.

Did he destroy the environment serving McDLT’s? Asking for a liberal friend. LOL

Not for very long. The McDLT was a dud. I was in college when it came out, and one of my pals called the McBFD.

For quite a while, I thought it would be cool to be Farah Fawcett's masseuse.

For most, that job would be more interesting for a masseur. The masseuses would be more interested in Tom Selleck or Burt Reynolds.

I was wondering about that. Usually, dedicated young employees get a shot at purchasing into the franchise an opening up their own stores.

I knew a guy that was a young father and needed extra money, so he went to work for a local McD’s. He eventually quit his “real job” and now owns several locations.
