“NONE from the 1940s.” — No kidding. The great era of comedy and slapstick. I just watched the Jack Lemmon “Operation Mad Ball” which was hilarious.
“This is a list by someone given an assignment who knows little about cinema or its history.” Yep. Probably a 23 year old.
I was watching a show (Larry King?) where he had on a few people after Walter Matheau’s death. Jack Lemmon told the story where Walter did a scene and falls from the rafters in a theater- but the cushion was in the wrong place and he landed hard. Walter thought he was going to die, moaning, etc.
Jack ran to him, straightened him out onto his back, put his jacket under his head. “And then, I know it’s a stupid question now - he’s moaning in pain - but I ask him ‘Walter - are you comfortable?’
He looks up at me and says “eh - I make a living.”
