Mary Anna Custis Lee was Martha Washington's great-granddaughter through her first husband, Daniel Custis. When Mary married Robert E Lee, Mary's family gave her some slaves as a wedding gift whom she immediately freed --- just like her grandmother Martha had done for the slaves her parents gave her.
