It’s more likely to be a protracted operation.

Similarly, a country that goes to the expense and trouble of building nuclear weapons and the systems to deliver them should be assumed to be willing to use them when national survival is at stake.
Offhand, I can think of four cases after WW II in which the use of nuclear weapons was credibly threatened: the Korean War (by the US against China); the Cuban missile crisis; by Russia against China after their falling out; and by Russia on Egypt's behalf in the 1973 Yom Kippur War.
