Maybe I underestimate the gravity of the situation.

It’s more likely to be a protracted operation.

I think it is usually a mistake to think that someone whose life is threatened and is pointing a gun and threatening to shoot is simply not going to shoot.

Similarly, a country that goes to the expense and trouble of building nuclear weapons and the systems to deliver them should be assumed to be willing to use them when national survival is at stake.

Offhand, I can think of four cases after WW II in which the use of nuclear weapons was credibly threatened: the Korean War (by the US against China); the Cuban missile crisis; by Russia against China after their falling out; and by Russia on Egypt's behalf in the 1973 Yom Kippur War.
