The original Wright flyer was damaged after only a couple of flights. The Wright brothers, disassembled it and sent it back to Dayton for storage. When they got home they got busy making improved versions. Their head mechanic reassembled it on his own, without asking permission, and replaced some damaged parts. He kept the damaged parts in the shop as historical artifacts, and the splinters that have been distributed around the world came from those parts. The head mechanic did not keep the parts for himself or for gain, he maintained them for the owners, the Wright Brothers.
