When the COVID-19 pandemic took off in 2020, so too did questions over the effectiveness of wearing a face mask to prevent the spread of the virus. Now, three and a half years later, what does the science say?
In an interview for 60 Minutes, CBS News chief medical correspondent Dr. Jon LaPook posed that question to Linsey Marr, a Virginia Tech University professor specializing in aerosol science.
"They are very helpful in reducing the chances that the person will get COVID because it's reducing the amount of virus that you would inhale from the air around you," Marr said about masks.
No mask is 100% effective. An N95, for example, is named as such because it is at least 95 percent efficient at blocking airborne particles when used properly. But even if a mask has an 80% efficiency, Marr said, it still offers meaningful protection.
"That greatly reduces the chance that I'm going to become infected," Marr said.
Marr said research shows that high-quality masks can block particles that are the same size as those carrying the coronavirus. Masks work, Marr explained, as a filter, not as a sieve. Virus particles must weave around the layers of fibers, and as they do so, they may crash into those fibers and become trapped.
Marr likened it to running through a forest of trees. Walk slowly, and the surrounding is easy to navigate. But being forced through a forest at a high speed increases the likelihood of running into a tree.
"Masks, even cloth masks, do something," she said.

Once again literal lies from the LSM
An N95 mask is rated to remoce 95% of particles that are 300nm in diameter or greater.
Covid virus averages between 20nm-30nm, The mask is basically useless.
Now remember most were never required to wear even an N95, just paper, which is not even rated as a filter!
These people need to hang from the same Gallows a Dr. Mengele should but at least some of his nurses did.
Such NS in the article-—there’s so many studies showing masks do NOTHING in real world situations. Heck, there’s an NIH study that shows masks made no difference.
So it begs the question, which science is wrong. The science before 2020 or after. One of them is wrong, which one is it?
That was my rationale for wearing a mask, but there’s a Cochrane meta-analysis that found they do little to nothing. That, and the reduced danger of the newer variants makes me not as concerned about masking.
>>>>Starting off with “What Science Knows Now”<<<<<<
I laugh at that all the time because, if science has become so advanced, then why did we think 3 years ago masks don’t stop a virus? But now they offer great protection? Are masks that sophisticated that modern science missed this for hundreds of years? If our sophisticated scientists had this wrong for all this time, then anything from science can never be settled.
It’s Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University
If "COVID" proved anything, it is that a large majority of people are unbelievably stupid, ignorant, naive, and fearful.
I had to wear one when I went to my chiropractor. They had those timed scent aerosol spray things and I could smell it. Even with a mask on, I could tell what fragrance it was. If a spray aerosol could get past a mask, so could Covid. After that experience, I didn’t wear my mask. No one said anything about it either.
Not ment to stop the virus but to stop your heart.
Yah, that is it.
Saying that masks prevent SOME inhalation is true, and typical commie trash BS. Think standing in front of an explosion wearing body armor. Yeah, it caught the shrapnel on your torso. But, your head is gone plus both legs.
WHO and CDC funded mask use studies back in 2015 in SEast asia. Hundreds of participants in hospitals, etc. Definitively showed that N95 lets thru more than half of virii and cloth masks >90%.
That is not protection.
And, these studies have been available on the WWW for years.
If you know that it is a CBS article then why are you sending everyone to MSN instead of to the actual source?
What they know is that they need to put that stuff on the package to prevent being infected by lawsuits.
Well, lookee here, from 2006...

“Face mask effectiveness: What science knows now”
naturally, the article didn’t contain a single particle of actual science, but instead simply quoted the pontifications of a single so-called “expert” ...
Not anymore. That’s the former official name. Now it’s Virginia Tech.
Sorry, I meant to say that’s the “formal, official name,” not former. It’s most commonly known now as Virginia Tech.
I was the Publications Manager for the Alumni Association for a few years, and we never used VPI & SU.
My daughter and son-in-law are all about masking -they mask everywhere in public to this very day.
Both got nasty cases of COVID over the summer - my daughter had a relapse right after she recovered, took weeks for her to feel well again.
I almost fainted after wearing a mask for about 30 minutes, I actually fell against my car. After that, I was done.
