The biggest problem with the MLB right there. Pointless worship of tradition. The grind of the season doesn’t determine anything. When the “best” team in the league only wins 60% of the games and the “worst” team in the league wins 40% of the games there really is no best and worst. It’s the team was least effected by the pointless grind and the team that was most effected. The schedule provides enough time to determine that schedule is too damn long and allow the randomness that effects all sports to even out the results. Baseball is the perfect example of the coin toss test, the more times you flip a coin the closer you’re going to get to 50-50 results. And we see in baseball that 162 coin flips shrinks your deviation down to 60-40.

And all that “pastime” horse hockey is really just because it was the first seriously established sport in America. And it was well built for radio. With a general lack of competition it ruled. Once it got competition, especially TV which the other sports all work much better on than radio, baseball started dropping in importance to the country. And the 162 game season has a lot to do with that. The American spirit doesn’t have a lot of time for a sport where 1/3 of the games don’t matter.

“ The grind of the season doesn’t determine anything.”

This premise is wrong.

“ When the “best” team in the league only wins 60% of the games and the “worst” team in the league wins 40% of the games there really is no best and worst. ”

That makes no sense.

Are you unable to know 98 is more than 68 or 60% is more than 40%?

Your argument is that all games are meaningless as to which team is best and that is especially true, under your argument, in the post season.

The argument doesn’t make sense.

Even in football 16 games is enough to determine a 10-6 team is better than a 6-10 team.

“ The biggest problem with the MLB right there. Pointless worship of tradition.”

What you’re saying seems to be you don’t like baseball.

And you seem unaware of what MLB has been doing, they certainly are not maintaining tradition.

But the difference between those 2 is TINY.

Baseball is the only sport in the world where a team that wins 60% of the games is considered dramatically better than a team that wins 40%. In every other sport both teams would be considered mediocre, basically 500 teams that need to improve.

In football a 10-6 is considered OK. Not great. They’re only 2 games over 500. Nobody is calling them the best team in the league. And a 6-10 isn’t that much worse, 2 games under 500, neither team is very good. The one big difference is that with a little luck the 10-6 team could make the playoffs, and could be champions. But even if they win the Superbowl nobody is calling them the best team in the league, they just won the Superbowl.

I find baseball a fun game to watch sometimes. But the grind of the season is just pointless. And I can’t get into it. I can’t get into a sport where people insist 60% win teams are great. They aren’t. The baseball season is long enough to make no team great. The best they do is survive.
