I wrote a paper on this disease becoming a threat to the US back in veterinary school in 1982 if the US didn't stay diligent on carriers coming into the US. Dogs are susceptible. Chagas' Disease is also making way into the US as the vector, the kissing bug, has now made its way and found as far as Tennessee.

Never mind...yours sound a whole lot worse than mine.

Per wiki:

“Ceratopogonidae is a family of flies commonly known as no-see-ums, or biting midges, generally 1–3 millimetres (1⁄16–1⁄8 in) in length. The family includes more than 5,000 species,[2] distributed worldwide, apart from the Antarctic and the Arctic.”
