Sometimes he overplays his role. Imagine, if he is playing a role, how hard it must be for him.

I am 188% percent sure of this. Including that Trump told him re: the election, something like “Sometimes it’s more courageous to not do something” - paraphrasing, probably someone will remember.
Pence is playing a very difficult role.
I remember that. At that time, I couldn't understand why Pres. Trump would say that it sometimes takes more courage to do nothing.
There's also the fact that he and Pence had had a very cordial meeting that morning, and both were in good spirits. Trump said something after that meeting along the lines of (and yes I'm paraphrasing here) "We're both on the same page" and "He'll do the right thing". I've tried and tried to find the exact quotes, but haven't been successful. That's very frustrating, as I know I saw it somewhere.
