I was based in and around Israel in the late 80s and two things struck me: how small the country was -it was an easy drive from Rafah to the Lebanese border in daylight on one day. The second thing that struck me was how pervasive the casual carrying of firearms by the IDF was - they were everywhere, every bus stop, every crossroad. The families I knew had firearms in their homes and because of their prior army service, they knew how to use them

What changed? Why had readiness dropped to the point that of all the towns/kibbutzim and the music festival (!) that were attacked, only one of them had a security team leader with the presence of mind to prepare for battle?

Where were the IDF or the police? You would think that anyone with any intelligence at all would have suspected that the surrounding violent enemies could attack from any direction, at any time.

Who dropped the ball?

“Who dropped the ball?”

The people dropped the ball. They became accustomed to seeing armed people around and surrendered their security to that illusion and allowed the politicians to pass restrictive gun control laws. Those laws are being relaxed now and the gun shops are doing record setting sales. Hamas is probably going to be named “Salesman of the Year” just like Odumbo was back in the day.

Israel had relative peace the past 20 years so they became complacent. And they're mostly liberal. Kind of like Jews you'll meet in New York City.
