Sandpoint named Coolest Small City in Idaho
Bonner County Daily Bee ^ | October 19, 2023 | Lauren Reichenbach

Who’s the coolest in Idaho?

That’d be the county seat — aka Sandpoint. The city was recently recognized as the “coolest small city” in Idaho by Fifty Grande magazine, a leading magazine for U.S. travel.

“Apologies to all the longtime Sandpointers who’ve seen their onetime hidden gem exposed to throngs of transplants over the past few years — that’s what you get when your little town on the shores of Lake Pend Oreille provides so much in such a small area,” said the article, which was published last month.

Fifty Grande listed Schweitzer as one of Sandpoint’s biggest draws for decades, but claims the city has forged an identity of its own apart from the ski resort through its golf courses, craft breweries and nearby Silverwood and Boulder Beach.

Additionally, there’s the popular City Beach, with volleyball nets and tennis courts, where locals and tourists alike can get a nice tan with unrestricted views of the mountains, the article continued. A short drive down Highway 200, Clark Fork River has great whitewater rafting, which is far less logjammed than the Snake or Salmon rivers.

"Sandpoint is the epitome of cool,” said Fifty Grande editor-in-chief Chris Walsh. “Its lakeside location boasts both breathtaking natural beauty and recreational opportunities. While it may be small, Sandpoint punches above its weight and there's tons to do. It's a low-key and great place with appeal for many types of travelers."

Dang! I missed the Oktoberfest last weekend!

Utara Brewing Oktoberfest

They wrote "Did you know it was the first time we had all the 7B breweries in the same place at the same time?! Iconic!!"

"7B" -- insider jargon for Idahoans.

“Idaho Nazis”

Yes, we are filled with them. Everybody stay far away. It isn’t safe here.

Yes, but if you CAN find your way to the airport, you can stop at Miller's Country Store and pick up some "V Bar X Bacon." Best bacon ever.

probably shouldn’t post articles about how wonderful a place is if you don’t want just anyone going there

“Sarah Palin’s hometown, too.”

I totally forgot about that. Thanks.

“Also home of Litehouse salad dressings.”

Yes. Litehouse makes really good dressings. Another good one is the “Coeur d’Alene Dressing Co.” Probably hard to find down your way. Their sugar-free Russian dressing is outstanding.

There’s always a Litehouse semi trailer parked north of the Super One market in Sandpoint.

“7B” is the license plate prefix and slang for Bonner County. And Miller’s Country Store is right on the road to the Sandpoint municipal rifle range. Where I’m going tomorrow. New scope to zero. Gotta get there early. The place is lousy with Fudds this close to hunting season.

Gack. Bad grammar. I’m ashamed of myself. Losing mastery of homophones.

Do any other states have 7 “B” counties?

Happy shooting!

Sandpoint - basically caters to the year-round artsy-fartsy crowd, tourists and the winter skiing enthusiasts who patronize the Schweizer mountain resort. Downtown Sandpoint is lots of little boutiques and restaurants that tend to come and go. Organic/vegan this and that. Having said that, Sandpoint hosts an amazingly good steakhouse. Hydra has been around for a while and it's our go-to for birthday and anniversary celebrations. Decor is antique/western lodge style. Killer steaks and prime rib. Great craft beers on tap. Meat - it's whats for effing dinner.

A while back, either the current mayor or the previous one tried to ban conceald/open carry at some pickle tinkle open air art festival. Didn't go over too well, but there were enough people there who thought it was a great idea.

“Cool” is uncool.

“Cool” means normal people will be priced out, if they haven’t been already.

There’s no Dindu Nuffins that’s why.

Yep. The near complete lack of Dindus keeps things low key and copacetic. None of that Disney-style Mutual of Omaha's Wild Kingdom happenings here. We live about 34 miles away in Oldtown. There's not much town in Oldtown. And that's ok.

I agree! I used to live there, near the base of the Long Bridge.

I worked security at Schweitzer in the winters and worked construction in Spokane and Cd’A in the other seasons.

I LOVED Sandpoint and North Idaho!

Show me a place in the country where that HASN’T happened.

The enviro-kooks killed all the good blue-collar mill jobs. Now it’s tourism and outdoors that brings in the bucks.

It isn’t the same country we grew up in.

Also, the birthplace of Patrick F. McManus. One of the great outdoor humor writers. Rancid Crabtree is rolling over in his grave and Bo Tully is tugging on his mustache. The times….
