Because unlike Germany, Britain and France failed to maintain and rebuild their militaries after World War I.

You should have seen our military around 1938.

“”””You should have seen our military around 1938.””””

So very true, the 1930s military was shabby, poorly equipped and looked down upon by the public, in 1938 Reagan was an officer in the Horse Cavalry Reserves and my dad would be enlisting in 1939 in the Navy.

“”The 1930s was defined by the Great Depression. As the country struggled for food, housing, and employment the Army continued to shrink in size. The Army dwindled to just over 180,000 men on active duty. Their morale and pay continued to be low. There weren’t enough weapons to train adequately, and when weapons were to be had there was often no ammunition.””

“You should have seen our military around 1938.”

I saw newsreels of our “training.” Pretty sad.
