I dont really think that mold is a problem anymore now than in the past. Im sure the old wood barracks at FT.KNOX smelled the same to some scared kid that signed up for Korea, as it did to in 1980. Probably the same exact mold spores.

The smells: a musty old tent with sweat and occasional intestinal gas, the smell of a space heater on cold nights
The sounds: At Grafenwohr and Hohenfels, the snorting of wild boars as they sneaked in at night looking for something good to eat (and they smelled, too!)

The unmistakable odor of canvas? Some things never leave your memory. The say smells are one of the most lasting memories but only when you smell them do they take you back to the setting where you smelled them.
Now that you've posted the picture I can't get the smell out of my mind.
