Piper Laurie dies aged 91: Oscar-nominated actress was lauded for star turns in Carrie and Twin Peaks

Iconic actress Piper Laurie has died aged 91.

Laurie - best-known for her star turn in Carrie as the title character's demented mother, passed away at her Los Angeles home on Saturday. The star, who began her career as a contract player during the golden age of Hollywood, had been ill for some time.

Manager Marion Rosenberg called the star 'a beautiful human being and one of the great talents of our time.'

In Carrie, Laurie played Margaret White, the fanatically religious and abusive mother of the title character, in a 1976 film adaptation of Stephen King's novel by Brian De Palma

Her performance earned her an Academy Award nomination and began a surprise second act for Laurie, who was a housewife in upstate New York at the time, having given up acting a decade earlier.

The actress secured her first Oscar nomination for her work in the 1961 film The Hustler where she played opposite Paul Newman.

Her character saw her playing an alcoholic who memorably tells Newman's character, 'Look, I've got troubles and I think maybe you've got troubles. Maybe it'd be better if we just leave each other alone.'

In 1986 she appeared in the romantic drama Children of a Lesser God.

Laurie made her debut at 17 in Louisa, playing Reagan´s daughter, then appeared opposite Francis the talking mule in Francis Goes to the Races. She made several films with Curtis, whom she once dated, including The Prince Who Was a Thief, No Room for the Groom, Son of Ali Baba and Johnny Dark.

That’s caused by the bras from the late 40s and 50s. Were they designed to serve the fantasies of the returning lonely GIs?

She turned in an Oscar worthy performance in The Hustler (as did Scott, Newman, and Gleason).

In the 50s she was on some “Playhouse 90” type performance of “Days of Wine and Roses”. It was excellent...and she was excellent. It’s on DVD if anyone’s interested in seeing it.

A search on duckduck and subsequently to YouTube I rediscovered Playhouse 90. I’m going to have to check some of these out.

A while ago I purchased a DVD of Failsafe which was done in the playhouse 90s style. I remember 5 of our teenaged nieces and nephews were over one rainy weekend and they were on a movie fest so I whipped that one out and was amazed... their attention was completely focused the entire time to that production.

I also blew their mind with Vanishing Point... they absolutely did not expect that ending.

I guess those cone bras were a fashion statement back during that period. You see them occasionally in old moves and sweater adverts.

I remember her in The Hustler opposite Paul Newman and George C. Scott. Nice Jewish girl from Detroit, smolderingly beautiful, and a great actress. RIP.

Yes,in the 1950s and into the 1960s you'd see various performances of that type on network TV and,IIRC,at least occasionally they'd be live. Along with “Days” was another such performance that I love called “A Wind From The South”.It,too,is on DVD and I'll bet that it's on youtube as well.
