Doesn't have to be that way ... there's a cool new tech that generates ammonia (and oxygen) from water, nitrogen (from the air), and electricity. It's not commercialized yet, but sounds very promising.

(Someone's surely going to chime in with "Yeah, but where does the electricity come from?" ... I never said it was a free lunch [petroleum isn't either, btw] but there are obviously ways to generate electricity that don't involve oil or gas.)

It's called "electrolysis of water". Not new, but maybe somebody has found a better ways of doing it. At present, hydrogen is commercially generated by reforming CH₄.

Yeah ... you can fission uranium or plutonium. Everything else is either carbon or solar. And solar is limited to 1 kw/m² at the top of the atmosphere, at the equator, at high noon.
