I am Ukrainian. My country has been invaded by Russia. In this video I will tell you what happened on the five hundred ninety sixth day of the war.

Day 596: Oct 12

Today, there are a lot of updates from the Bakhmut direction.

Here, Ukrainian fighters recently breached the Russian defense along the rails and finally launched operations on the other side of the railway embankment. Ukrainian fighters from the 5 Assault Brigade recently released a video showing how they penetrated Russian defense by conducting tank assaults around Klishchiivka.

Ukrainians continued using the tactics of small assault units for more controlled and dynamic operations. This time, the assault unit consisted of 1 tank (T-80), 1 armored fighting vehicle (Swedish CV90), and 1 armored personnel carrier (American M113). The road was demined the same day the engineering reconnaissance identified mines along the planned route. All vehicles were keeping their distance so that the enemy artillery could not hit several objects at once.

In order to cover the landing, the tank turned into the field and opened fire at 2 Russian positions in the tree lines, and 2 other vehicles delivered 2 assault units to storm these positions. The tank continuously maneuvered to complicate aiming for ATGM crews and artillery fire correction. While the armored fighting vehicles withdrew after a successful landing, the tank still continued firing to cover their withdrawal as well as to suppress enemy fire and allow the assault units to get to the enemy trenches. Once the infantry engaged, the tank withdrew. The assault was successful, and Ukrainians advanced further in the forest north of Klishchiivka.

When it comes to the area east of Klishchiivka, Ukrainians apparently used a different tactic. Russian sources reported that Ukrainian reconnaissance would identify Russian key fortifications and strong points and systematically, and without hurry, shell them until Russians were completely erased. After that, a small Ukrainian unit captures the area and immediately entrenches.

And the application of this tactic is not surprising because the Ukrainian fighters reported that Russian forces brought in reserves into the region and conducted relentless counterattacks – launching one wave after another with the goal of pushing Ukrainians back behind the rails. Unfortunately for Russians, all Russian reinforcements were destroyed.

Ukrainian fighters published an unbelievably large number of videos of the destruction of Russian equipment and personnel. Based only on the publicly available footage, over the last week, Ukrainians destroyed 8 tanks, 14 artillery systems, 2 air defense rocket launchers, 10 trucks with ammunition and personnel, 3 armored vehicles, 3 ammunition depots, and 3 areas of forces concentrations – in total around 40 pieces of equipment.

But many strikes were not published, so the number of destroyed equipment is even higher. In fact, the Spokesman for the Eastern Group of Forces reported that Ukrainians destroyed here 20 artillery systems only over the last 24 hours.

Such an extensive artillery and drone strikes campaign was achieved as a result of the joint work of 120 Reconnaissance and 28 Mechanized Brigades, 5 and 92 Assault Brigades, 93 Mechanized Brigade, and 45 Artillery Brigade. As you can see, almost all strikes happened a few km away from the contact line, namely around Opytne, Odradivka, Zaitseve, and Kodema, meaning along all major supply roads.

After successfully exhausting Russian forces and their offensive capabilities, Ukrainians started gradually moving further. The greatest results were achieved east of Andriivka, where, as previously reported, Ukrainians took by storm the Russian bunker, attacked it from 2 sides, and established control over it. This operation laid the ground for further expansion of the bridgehead on the other side of the embankment, and the Spokesman for the Eastern Group of Forces reported that Ukrainians advanced by 300 more meters in the direction of Odradivka.

Ukrainian fighters from the famous 3 Assault Brigade published a video of one of the storming operations in this region. As a result, they managed to capture the commander of the “Alga” volunteer battalion of the Russian 72nd Motorized Rifle Brigade.

Overall, Ukrainians successfully crossed a very challenging line of defense along the embankment, withstood relentless counterattacks from the newly arrived reserves into the region, and inflicted record-high losses to the Russians. In fact, the number of geolocated videos with destroyed Russian equipment per day exceeds even what we saw during the Battle for Bakhmut, so the Ukrainian reconnaissance drone operators are definitely working day and night to monitor all locations from which Russians can deliver a new batch of reinforcements.

The 1994 secret operation that saved Crimea, and perhaps Ukraine, from Russian occupation-
The untold story of Ukraine’s covert operation 30 years

Ukrainian public broadcaster Suspilne produced a documentary by Ukrainian director Serhiy Lysenko titled Crimea. Liberation. Using documents and first-hand accounts from former Ukrainian Security Service (SBU) officials, the film tells the story of Russia’s first failed attempt to occupy Crimea and control the Ukrainian peninsula.

“Everything was done quickly, clearly, rigidly, and correctly,” recalled Serhiy Ropaev in the documentary. Ropaev was involved in the 1994 events as head of the SBU’s Special Forces Alpha unit. Due to Ukraine’s demonstration of strength, local Russian-backed politician Yuriy Meshkov quickly lost support and eventually fled to Moscow, while Russia didn’t dare use its army against Ukraine.

But in 2014, Moscow effectively used a small window of opportunity when a destabilized, post-revolutionary Ukraine couldn’t react similarly. Yevhen Marchuk, the first head of the Ukrainian Security Service (1991-1994), admits in the film that the strategy Moscow used to invade Ukraine in 2014 was almost identical to how it attempted to occupy Crimea in 1994. Marchuk conveyed this information in his last interview before his death on 5 August 2021. [Excerpt]

Ukraine wins

if you look at the maps of who is where in Ukraine... nothing has changed in months. The Russians took back what they wanted months ago and have held on to it. Zelensky has killed off almost an entire generation of young men and boys trying to secure more funding to kill off even more.

My wife and I recently met a large group of Ukrainian boys between the ages of 14 and 17 whose families sent them abroad to keep them from being kidnapped from their schools and off the streets like so many of their friends. None of them knew if they would ever see their families or their homes again. They are well behaved good kids who are being helped by our friends who are members of a local Ukrainian Church. If they get caught, unlike other foreigners in this country who have overstayed their VISAs they will immediately be sent back and likely killed or maimed in battle and our friends might be deported as well.

Our Ukrainian friends have a different definition of “winning” than you do. Zelensky was elected after he promised to end corruption and make peace with Russia. Now approximately 80% of Ukrainians feel that he is the one most responsible for corruption in Ukraine.

https://www.businessinsider.com/corruption-in-ukraine-zelenskyy-is-responsible-says-national-survey-2023-8?op=1

The reason Zelensky has suspended elections until after the fighting has ended is because he has lost the confidence of his people and has made himself a dictator.

I doubt that you will follow my suggestion, but there is an interesting book review essay from 2021 by Peter Rutland on archive.org. This short review summary likely would be helpful to you whether you realize it or not. This was before the "invasion" of February 24, 2022. After the invasion the ridiculous amount of propaganda that accompanies any modern conflict began coloring all of our perceptions. The "review essay" is about several books and is entitled, Understanding Putin’s Russia and the Struggle over Ukraine. Rutland has been a harsh critic of the invasion.

“We can clearly see that our enemy, Russia, is interested in the worst-case scenario in the Middle East.

I am grateful to everyone who works to keep the Middle East from further exploding, but also to hold terrorists accountable for everything they have done against Israel—against children and women, against ordinary people.

We also remember about the citizens of other countries who have been detained or killed by terrorists. There are also Ukrainians among the dead. My condolences go out to everyone who has lost a loved one.

It is critically important—for everyone around the world including those who do not yet comprehend—that terrorists must always be held accountable for all the evil they have caused.”

An April 2014 Kyiv International Institute of Sociology poll of all of the oblasts of southern and eastern Ukraine other than Crimea (which was already annexed by Russia by that point) found majority opposition to secession from Ukraine and annexation by Russia in all of these oblasts–albeit only slight majority in opposition to this in the Donbas (Donetsk and Luhansk oblasts).
Opposition to secession from Ukraine and annexation by Russia (the combined percentage for the people opting for the options of “Rather, no” and “Certainly, no, I don’t”) had these percentages in various southern and eastern Ukrainian oblasts:
• 51.9% Luhansk Oblast
• 52.2% Donetsk Oblast
• 65.6% Kharkiv Oblast
• 8.8% Odesa Oblast
• 81.5% Zaporizhia Oblast
• 84.1% Dnipropetrovsk Oblast
• 84.6% Kherson Oblast
• 85.4% Mykolayiv Oblast

Pro-Russian insurgents in eastern Ukraine have reportedly taken over a Christian university in the major city of Donetsk and are using the university to house insurgents in preparation for battle.

“They want to accommodate more soldiers, so that place becomes the number one target for the insurgency,” said Sergey Rakhuba, president of Peter Deyneka Russian Ministries and a former board member of the university. “If the Ukrainian army attacks, this Christian university would be destroyed.”

Separatists attempting to gain control of the city are using Donetsk Christian University and Gloria Christian School for accommodations, Rakhuba told Mission Network News.

Insurgents have also overtaken several other public buildings in the city. Around 20 staff members and their families were initially trapped inside the buildings but were then allowed to leave, Rakhuba said.

Rakhuba says he is concerned for the safety of campus buildings and people in the area during the ...

You mean this invasion would NEVER have started if Putin only had to honor the 1994 Budapest Declaration’s commitment to Ukraine’s territorial sovereignty and national unity.
The Budapest Memorandum on Security Assurances comprised of political agreements signed at the OSCE conference in Budapest, Hungary, on 5 December 1994, to provide security assurances by its signatories relating to the accession of Belarus, Kazakhstan and Ukraine to the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT).

These three memoranda were originally signed by three nuclear powers: the Russian Federation, the United Kingdom and the United States. China and France gave individual assurances in separate documents.

HOWEVER, PUTIN DOESN’T HONOR HIS COMMITMENTS.

The Treaty on “Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons and effectively abandoning Belarus, Kazakhstan and Ukraine nuclear arsenal to Russia and Russia AGREED to:

-Respect the signatory’s independence and sovereignty in the EXISTING BORDERS.

-Refrain from the threat or the use of force against the signatory.

-Refrain from economic coercion designed to subordinate to their own interest the exercise by the signatory of the rights inherent in its sovereignty and thus to secure advantages of any kind.

-Seek immediate Security Council action to provide assistance to the signatory if they “should become a victim of an act of aggression or an object of a threat of aggression in which nuclear weapons are used”.

-Refrain from the use of nuclear arms against the signatory.

-Consult with one another if questions arise regarding those commitments.

IT IS WELL KNOWN GLOBALLY that PUTIN could stop this INVASION any time by withdrawing military troops.
He won’t.

Putin just keeps letting those dead bodies pile up. It’s not like he cares about the Russian population or military.

“Regarding Minsk Agreements”
Ukraine is merely a continuation of Putin’s pattern of “Transnistrian” policy. Putin has also managed to control ‘zones’ of frozen conflicts in Moldova (Transnistria region), Georgia (Abkhazia and South Ossetia), and now with in Ukraine annexed Crimean peninsula and the Donbas.
Putin uses this wider pattern of “created” separatist conflicts to create corruption and criminality as ‘Trojan horses’ to block progress in reform-minded periphery countries. This is the Putin tactical part of his geopolitical strategy that CREATES conflict zones to prevent countries from entering NATO and integrating into the European Union.

These CONFLICTS by Putin is part of his ‘imperialistic plan’ to regain strategic points of the LOST RUSSIAN EMPIRE.
So, for Ukraine this means Putin must fully separate occupied parts of Luhansk and Donetsk oblasts from Ukraine and recognize them as Donbas puppet republics just like Georgia’s Abkhazia and South Ossetia.

“Regarding Minsk Agreements”
The MINSK-2 merely was a second attempt to force Ukraine to accept Russia’s Transnistria for the Donbas, a “peace enforcement” to push both occupied regions back into Ukraine as Russian-run enclaves to expand Russia’s control over the internal and external affairs of Ukraine.

Sad, that you chose not to look over the link that I sent to you in all sincerity. You will note that in your own cut and pasted sentence here that the referral is to the “LOST RUSSIAN EMPIRE” not the former Soviet Union. There is a difference.

The situation is similar to if Texas had been allowed to secede in 1991 and President Biden decided that the “United States” wanted it back because the government had become a Chinese puppet state and they had assembled a Chinese proxy army that was threatening all of the bordering states.

‘Without Leaving Home, We Became Foreigners’: Ukrainians Escape Russian Occupation Through The Only Open Border Crossing
RadioFreeEurope/RadioLiberty

KRASNOPILLYA, Ukraine — Their paths crossed at a volunteer center a short drive from the Russian border: Bohdan, an athletic, shaven-headed 17-year-old with a wide smile; Natalya, an exhausted middle-aged woman barely holding back tears; and Valeriy, a spry, smartly dressed pensioner.

A few hours earlier, they had all been on the other side.

Bohdan came a long way, from Khanty-Mansiysk in western Siberia, where he had gone with his mother to join relatives after the war forced them out of Kostyantynivka, their hometown in Ukraine’s east. Natalya had been in Enerhodar, home to Europe’s largest nuclear power plant, now occupied by Russia, just two days earlier. Valeriy had left Donetsk, the largest city in the Donbas seized by Moscow-backed forces in 2014, just that morning. (excerpt)

The Shortest Way In

The small Kolotylivka-Pokrovka border crossing, between Russia’s Belgorod region and Ukraine’s Sumy region, is the only place where Ukrainians can enter government-controlled Ukrainian territory from Russia. Travel in the opposite direction is not possible.

After Moscow launched its full-scale invasion in February 2022, Ukraine officially closed all its border crossings with Russia and Belarus. For several months, displaced people were able to cross the front line from Russian-occupied territory inside Ukraine in a few places, often risking detention or death from shellfire, but the last of such routes, in the southern Zaporizhzhya region, was closed last autumn.
