At that time in the 1990s, then after the convention into the early 2000s, it was not only Buchanan's convention speech or what his stated positions meant. It was all of Buchanan's other words and actions that alienated most Republicans. He came across as trying to dictate that the GOP would go his way or no way at all. As a result at the time he became part of the fringe right that was more of use to the left to attack the right than advance any cause or position he supported. His being right or wrong was less important than his obstructionism hurt the GOP more than what he supported helped. Well, that's how I remember it.
