You did the right thing.
A few years back, I shot a rabid racoon and threw it in a ditch. I told a client of mine who did rabies reaserch for the state and he read me the riot act.
He said rabies virus was active in the bodies for days after death. You burn the bodies to ash.
Also, Havaheart traps are a huge rabies spreader. Suburbanites love to spread rabid animals around.

These traps are great for holding the target in one place.
“relocating” wild animals is just a slow death. Very inhumane.
And I really want some cat food eating , aggressive raccoon let loose in my woods.
Nothing worse than a wildlife “friendly” suburbanite.
