Lear was shocked when Bunker became a beloved figure to much of middle America.
Lear thought Bunker’s opinions on race, sex, marriage, and religion were so wrong as to represent a parody of right-wing bigotry.

Carroll O'Connor was an excellent actor, and people could identify with his character's struggles. Archie, despite the malapropisms and temper, was a real man who loved his family. His instincts were often better than his rationale, and people could see that. It made for a better show.
