Some findings from Moscow’s most trusted military sources about the reappearance of Wagner troops on the battlefield in Ukraine’s Donetsk region have caused quite a stir. The surprise reappearance of Wagner forces in the Ukrainian city provided critical clues as to how Moscow’s offensive plans will take shape in the coming days.
However, in addition to the emergence of these findings, the crash of a plane carrying members of the mercenary group drew attention to this critical moment.
New video has emerged of the moment when a Russian-made transport plane, said to be carrying Wagner mercenaries, skidded off the runway and turned into a huge fireball. Footage of the crash was posted on social media. According to the footage, a massive Russian-made Ilyushin Il-76 transport plane skidded off the runway while landing in Gao, Mali. The plane was kicking up a cloud of dust before turning into a gigantic fireball. Pro-Ukrainian sources on social media claimed that as many as 140 people died in the crash, including Malian soldiers and Wagner fighters. Although the reports have not been confirmed, it is known that Wagner operates in the country and has used the airport in Gao in the past.
On the other hand, the tail number of the transport plane indicates that it belongs to the Belarusian cargo company Rubystar. So Belarus is also implicated in the crash that killed these Wagner soldiers. Sources close to Wagner, including the Gray Zone Telegram channel, denied that the group’s mercenaries were on board the ill-fated flight. The cause of the crash is reportedly under investigation, but it appears that the plane had descended well below the 2,500-meter runway before skidding.
The fiery crash was one of the most sensationalized in a month after Wagner’s billionaire boss Yevgeny Prigozhin was killed when his private jet crashed outside Moscow. In the wake of the plane crash that killed Wagner soldiers, it has emerged that Russia will again use this mercenary group on Ukrainian territory. Anton Yelizarov, the new leader of the Wagner Group, is reportedly in talks with the Russian military about integrating mercenary units into the National Guard. In particular, Yelizarov is allegedly in talks with Rosgvardia about integrating Wagner units into the national guard.
Moreover, the Institute for the Study of War recently revealed that the Russian Defense Ministry is in the process of recruiting former members of the Wagner Group for affiliated private military companies. This critical course of action coincides with ongoing discussions about the potential incorporation of Wagner units into the Russian National Guard, or Rosgvardia.
The findings are based on information from a prominent Russian military blogger who claims that following the failed rebellion led by founder Andrey Troshev, individuals who had previously disassociated themselves from the Wagner Group have now joined PMCs under the Russian Defense Ministry called Redut and the Volunteer Corps. In other words, Russia has once again put into action its plan to deploy Wagner forces in the citadel of war.
Founder Andrey Troshev is allegedly actively recruiting Wagner personnel currently deployed in Belarus, Africa and the Middle East for positions within the PMCs of the Russian Defense Ministry. While these allegations continue to shake the agenda, critical assessments are also coming from Ukraine regarding the presence of Wagner troops on the battlefield. The command of the Armed Forces of Ukraine has confirmed information about the presence of units of the Wagner Group in the east of the country.
