I have no problem with core urban transit being electric buses. They are quiet and don't put out filthy diesel exhaust. I used to ride electric buses in San Francisco in the early 70s, but they used a pantograph to get power from an enormous maze of overhead lines. Every now and then the pantograph would come off the wires and the driver would have to go to the rear of the bus to re-center it to the overhead wires. It was always comical to watch that.

Urban battery-powered buses make a lot of sense. We rode one in Banff, Alberta a couple weeks ago and it had the acceleration and quietness of those old San Francisco buses. The best thing was you could sit at outdoor cafes and restaurants and not have to endure diesel fumes and the huge noise from diesel engines. Here is one of the Banff buses disguised in urban camo...

It's cleaner. So that's good. The problem is that the batteries on electric buses are not going to last a long time. I assume 5-8 years. Then how do you replace the batteries. This is government we're talking about. With diesel buses, you can get 20 years out of them.

I don’t either but government shouldn’t be involved in stuff like this…leave it to the free market. But that won’t happen
