It would be quite satisfying to know that the “gibmedats” would spend a couple of years behind bars for their crimes. Unfortunately, we all know that all will be released with no bail and the charges will be reduced or dropped altogether. Any punishment will probably consist of nothing more than a few months probation and maybe a day or two of community service.
“Remember, in the end the police aren’t there to protect the public from criminals, they’re there to protect criminals from the public. Communities dealt with crime long before police were invented, usually in rather harsh and low-due-process ways. The bargain was, let the police handle it instead. No police, no bargain.” (as stated so eloquently by someone at Instapundit)
If things continue down the current path we are on, and the judicial system refuses to adhere to the “social contract” to maintain law and order, communities will return to instituting punishments themselves. The results will not be pretty, but what we have now is not exactly a “Norman Rockwell” painting of society.
