My honest guess is that this was a joke vote. Most students think the "homecoming" royalty honor is just a silly tradition that is cherished mostly by the social elite students (at least that was my experience and others' growing up.) The run-of-the-mill students have more important things to worry about.

Our freshman spirit organzation president in college was a really nerdy, "Pedro" type guy who no one took seriously, but we voted for him because the other announced candidates were so full of themselves. Not because we were enamored with him.

I could completely see the females in the student body voting for the guy just to spite the girls on the court.
