Maybe they can, I don’t want to see it come to that, that same incompetent military still occupies approximately 20% of Ukraine and shows no signs of leaving, despite a much hyped Ukrainian counteroffensive.
That same incompetent military has killed 10s of thousands of Ukrainians and basically destroyed a country.
The much hyped US Military was in Afghanistan for 20 years fighting goat herders, we left and the goat herders are now back and in control.
The point is, be careful what you read and think is true.

The difference is that the much-hyped Russian military has proven to be barely competent on the battlefield while the much-hyped American military performed well on the battlefield.
We left because of politics while Russia may have to leave because of their military.
