Testimony was given to Congress that physical threats have been made against civilian and military whistleblowers. One whistleblower who ran a DOD program similar to the NASA program testified in unclassified and classified Congressional hearings and even in a complaint made against the DOD and Intelligence Community (filed--under oath--with Intelligence Community Inspector General Thomas A. Monheim) that, among other things, his house was broken into and his family was threatened.
Here's a bit from NASA (Source):
Dan Evans, an assistant deputy administrator at NASA, told reporters Thursday that members of the independent report committee received threats...Not social media ridicule. Threats...presumably of harm to property or person or career.“That’s in part why we are not splashing the name of our new director out there, because science needs to be free,” Evans said. “Some of [the incidents] rose to actual threats.”
