Our previous neighbor, an 87 year old woman, found one in her garage and beat it to death with a baseball bat. The mess was spectacular. .
I never worried about her after that . . .

Some friends of mine spotted a possum laying beside the road in front of their house. It was playing possum.
Over the next couple of weeks it got better and better at playing possum. It figured out how to get very flat and how to emit a disgusting smell. It also figured out how to excrete body fluids.
Eventually the possum was gone. Apparently it got tired of playing possum. So we all had a big Possum Going Away Party.

Possums are harmless and helpful little creatures. Pick one up and they'll just hiss at you. They devour ticks by the bushell and are largely immune to poisonous snake bites. As such they're a potential source for life saving anti-venoms.
But having watched a fellow in a kayak shoot black swans on Lake Taupo with a rifle mounted on forward facing tripod (I was with a friend on his boat trolling for trout) I'm not surprised there are Kiwis who hunt possums. Not much sport, but neither was shooting big resting black swans on a beautiful caldera lake.
