I can't seem to get a day off.

No rest for the weary ... thanks for another fine summation of events in China.

I feel very bad for the Chinese people because they're industrious and hard-working, and the current chaos is not their fault. Hopefully there's someone there who will emerge as their champion and lead them through this minefield.

My maternal grandparents met in Peking in 1920. He was from Weymouth, MA and she was from Chicago. They got there from opposite directions.

My grandmother was one of the original women officers in the US Navy when the Nurse Corps was formed. She did most of WW1 in Pearl Harbor. It was a much nicer place then than WW2.

He was a doctor and served 2.5 years as a captain, on the Somme, in the Royal Army Medical Corps. The US Army wouldn't take him because he had a stiff left leg. It didn't stop him from traipsing up and down the Andes in 1914-1915. After the War he joined the International Red Cross in Paris. He took a train through the middle of the Russian Civil war to Vladivostok. He got as far as Tokyo where one of his Med School buddies recruited him to teach medicine at Peking Union Medical School.

After WW2 my grandmother ran an import/export business with her friend in Hong Kong. She sent them Singer Sewing machines and they sent her the best quality Chinese art they could lay their hands on. I grew up with it all over the house. I still have some on the walls here.

Ironically, the past 75 years have been some of the most peaceful and prosperous years in Chinese history. I hope the transition away from the CCP will be peaceful but I'm not betting on the outcome either way.
