Why didn’t Putin just send troops into those areas and secure them. To use your logic why are the rest of the ukranians fighting on the “wrong” side?
Apparently it is okay to invade and destroy the rest of ukraine to protect those areas?
Putin never accepted a free and sovereign Ukraine, has said so in writings and speeches. All the pretexts of protecting these people and denazifying the rest was just an excuse for a land and resource grab to “correct” a mistake.
I find the rhetoric from all sides fascinating , but none more that attacking Ukrainian cities, grain export infrastructure being okay, but attacking Moscow or kirsch bridge are terrorist acts?The “attacks” on Donbas …. after 2014 bad, invasion of rest of Ukraine “justified”?
Isn’t it interesting that until recently the Kremlin position was the 2014 “little green men….” Was an organic Ukrainian separatist thing and now they admit they were Russians all along
this was nothing more than a last gasp by Putin to reclaim some of former soviet territory and power he so laments losing
The result is tragic for both Ukraine and Russia, made even worse by the fact that Putin has no choice but to keep this up. Not for “justice “ or some higher cause like protecting Christianity…, but because after all of this if he loses territory he knows he is toast
In the end this is all about him, his legacy and ultimately his survival

There are at least two issues.
One is the Donbass, where the guy they voted for overwhelmingly got forced out in a coup orchestrated by Victoria Nuland.
The other is defensible borders for Russia.
Russia isn’t protected by oceans like the USA and the rest of the Anglo-sphere.
The 1991 border with Ukraine is stone markers in farmers fields with dozens of parallel roads across farmland going straight to Moscow.
When a hostile alliance like NATO is going to be on a border like that, it’s just an invitation to future attack, and the Russians are not going to accept it.
Russia has the military capability to change the facts on the ground.
They have exposed a lot of Western weapons as overhyped gold-plated crap. As well as showing the West has a non-existent military mass production capability. And an outsourced industrial base which will take decades to reverse (if it ever happens).
Ukraine is in the wrong place at the wrong time with the wrong friends.
They though they were going to join Globohomo and get rich. And now they are just going to be destroyed.
