We had rotary and the number was 2 letters followed by the numbers. Eventually it was transitioned to a slim line, touch tone, wall phone in the kitchen. Pay phones were everywhere.
Back in the day, we would be back from school, and make prank phone calls, well one day we called, we looked in the phone book(what's that now?) the number of the "Old Maid" on the street, and did the usual running gag of "Is your refridgerator running" and she said, "yes it is and I will find you little f#ckers"
Hung up and never did it again
