Rabbit ears as used in this instance is a baseball term from way back.(TVs from another era had rabbit ears as well)
If a player reacted to fans or other players who were razzing him, he got labeled as having rabbit ears.
Not sure when it was first used and entered our language, but the National League was created in 1876.
