The John Le Carre novel “Smiley’s People” provides a good overview of how spooks create a “legend” for an agent.
The BBC adapted it into an excellent 6-part miniseries starring Alec Guinness in 1982 that I highly recommend...along with the earlier “Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy.”
