An elderly Florida man was arrested by the FBI after he attempted to rob a Miami-area bank for $650 because he was “in desperate need for rent money” and faced becoming homeless.
On Aug. 24, Michael Terry Noojin, 67, jumped in line at a Bank of America in Hollywood, Florida, just after 2:40 p.m. and waited while the three tellers working were helping two other customers.
Noojin then walked up to the waiting teller and slid a brown plastic shopping bag under the protective glass divider, telling her, “I have a gun, put all the money in the bag,” according to an FBI criminal complaint obtained by the Daily Beast.
The teller didn’t reply to Noojin’s demands, forcing him to repeat his statement.
“I’m not playing around, I have a gun, put the money in the bag,” Noojin said.
The teller who was facing Noojin claimed she never saw a gun but locked her cash drawer anyway, prompting the two other tellers next to her to do the same, with one of them also activating the emergency alarm, according to the criminal complaint submitted to the US District Court for the Southern District of Florida.
Noojin, who was wearing a yellow polo shirt with sailboats and birds, blue jeans, white shoes and sunglasses, sensed his plan was foiled, grabbed the bag and ran out of the building via the emergency exit.

Bad plan. Go to a state where shoplifting under $950 is a misdemeanor and they don’t bother you. Then fence the stuff on eBay. Two or three heists and he would have made a thousand bucks.
No, he would not get off in California or any place else. Bank robbery is a federal offense not a state or local one.
Bank robbery is complicated...

California’s a long way from Florida - anyone know the closest democrat hellhole state to Florida?
To people in their 20s you're ancient. Don't sweat it.
“I don’t like a 67 year old person being labeled as ‘elderly.’”
Yup. I can relate to that. But elderly makes a better headline
I was about to say the same, but I am 64. I do not think 67 is “elderly.” Eighty is elderly.
Those tellers are going to get in trouble. The FDIC usually requires you follow such instructions. Not following them can get people killed—and since the deposits are insured, there is no reason to push back.
The tellers in our bank were trained over and over, the money is not worth your life. But we had tellers executed during a robbery years ago—so the message was a little more relevant to our bank.
Armed robbery of a bank is serious. Even in CA.
When I sat on a grand jury, we had a guy rob a bank to get into a drug rehab program. He told people he was going to do it. He told the tellers thats why he was doing it. He did it. He dumped the money so it could be recovered. He went home and waited for the cops.
It was a sad story.
and since the deposits are insured

Whom at the bottom line is paying for all that insurance?
Most of the time, bank robbery is covered under state prosecutions. If you do multiple robberies and shoot the place up…that will get the Fed’s involved.
I think people would be surprised as how many bank robberies go unsolved. I was surprised to learn that when I worked at a bank.
Hint: If you are planning on robbing a bank, give video surveillance and cop response times some consideration. You can work around that stuff and be on your way pretty quickly.
At least, I would want to be able go out in public wearing long white robes, carrying a staff, and issuing Commandments that the young’uns are forced to listen to. :)
This reminds me of the classic Woody Allen scene:
“I have a gub”

I didn’t see your post—great Woody Allen movie.

Sad, but a reality from your side of the USA to the California side.
