The accepted breakdown was: 1/3 loyal to the King; 1/3 for independence; 1/3 waiting to see which way the wind was blowing as the war progressed.
Well... Wrong. Over the aprox 2 million people in the Colonies in the later decades of the 1700’s... only 230k fought in the Colonial Army.
