DETAILS:
Kuleba said the resumption of the grain deal was “one of the key topics” of his talks with his Turkish counterpart.
“We have a common approach here: we are working, making every effort to resume the functioning of this initiative,” the Ukrainian Foreign Minister stressed.
Kuleba added that he and Fidan also discussed Türkiye’s participation in Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s peace formula, engagement of Turkish companies in Ukraine’s reconstruction, and Ukraine’s accession to NATO.
“Türkiye is a special NATO member for us and a special member for NATO itself,” the minister stressed.
For his part, the Turkish Foreign Minister said: “We are making further efforts to resume the Black Sea Grain Initiative in order not to lose the gains of the past months. And we will continue our dialogue on this issue”.
BACKGROUND:
- Earlier, the media reported that Türkiye and Russia were supposedly preparing a new agreement on the export of Russian grain, which would be unfavourable to Ukraine.
-
- On 17 July, Russia announced it was withdrawing from the grain deal and threatened “risks” to parties deciding to extend the initiative without Russia’s participation. Furthermore, Moscow began heavy attacks on the port infrastructure of Odesa and the Danube ports.
