I believe this is happening to all sectors of all industries. More taxes and regulations are chasing out the little guys and enabling large businesses to take over. I think it has to do with the old timers dying off. I’ve noticed this trend in Chicago, where it seemed there were 2 or 3 taverns every block on the main drags, and the occasional corner bar in the older residential neighborhoods.
I think the younger generations have turned to other ways to medicate themselves.
They mostly didn’t have cars, so would walk to the nearest pub, so lots of small pubs, which have been going out of business.
