Darick Benson, 20, was charged with aggravated vehicular hijacking following an armed carjacking on Saturday, Aug. 12, 2023.
A quick-thinking concealed carry holder in Chicago flipped the script during an attempted carjacking earlier this month, evading serious injury while shooting the carjacker, who was already on probation for a previous carjacking, and his alleged accomplice, according to a report.
An adult suspect — later identified as 20-year-old Darick Benson — and a juvenile female both suffered a gunshot injury after they unsuccessfully attempted to rob a rideshare driver, who was not identified, according to CWB Chicago.
According to court documents, the rideshare driver picked up Benson and the female in his SUV from the 1500 block of South Millard just after midnight on Aug. 12. Both passengers entered the backseat. Moments later, the situation turned violent as Benson, who was already on probation for a carjacking case late last year, allegedly pulled a gun and pointed it to the back of the driver’s head.
The driver, also a licensed conceal-carry holder, slowed the vehicle and jumped out as it was still moving. After regaining his composure, he then pulled out his own firearm and shot three rounds into the back of his vehicle, striking both Benson and the female
Assistant State’s Attorney John Kyle said Benson returned fire while attempting to drive the SUV away but was unable to do so as the key fob was in the driver’s pocket and was out of range, CWB Chicago reported.
Both suspects then fled on foot, leaving behind two cellphones.
Kyle said the driver initially left his phone in the vehicle when he jumped out, but it was taken by one of the suspects as they fled.
Officers tracked down the suspects, finding the girl about a block away.

Good, but a permanent neutralization would have been better.
Excellent - we need more good “gun control???”
Ok, I learn something every day. If I have my key fob in my pocket, am driving the vehicle, jump out .... what happens? Does the vehicle shut down?
Remarkable accuracy!
On many of the newer vehicles, yes. This is mainly the push-start ones (the ones with a keyfob that has no metal key with teeth that has to be slid into an ignition switch). These are the keyfobs that allow you to start the car by pushing a button as long as the keyfob is somewhere in the car (i.e. I start mine while my keyfob stays in my pocket). IIRC some of the earlier versions of cars with these keyfobs would not shut off if the keyfob leaves the vehicle (need the keyfob to start, but don't need it to stay running). Newer ones need the keyfob to stay in or near the car to keep running.
So, he was out of the vehicle, with no guns pointed at him, and no imminent threat on his life, as the vehicle was driving away, and he shot at the vehicle?
This is not textbook self defense. He might be in a heap of trouble, when the lawyers get done here.
HE will get probation along with his other probations.
yep I was right.
Dahmer had numerous probations and was killing people while out on them, 12 in the last 1.
As more violent crimes are being committed by juveniles we need another larger prison, same with women, 2 are not enough. The 30% average serve time is inadequate for murder and rape. Plea Bargaining must include the victim or their immediate family. Honest input, not the lies Bill Gibbons used to plea bargain a Murder 1 to a Murder 2 when my Developmentally delayed at 12-yrs-old, 16 by the calendar was BEATEN TO DEATH BY A SOCIOPATH, WHO CAN’T BE CURED. So proud of his deed he dragged his brother and friends to view his crime. Threatened to kill witnesses from jail.
Memphis and the other Blue areas of Tennessee are putting innocent people’s lives at stake with their adoption of failed policies.
A routine sentence of probation made possible some of the most sickening crimes in modern times. In 1989, Jeffery Dahmer was convicted of drugging and molesting a 13-year-old boy. He had been previously arrested for committing lewed acts in public. Dahmer could have gone to prison for 20 years but, ignoring a prosecutor‘s recommendation, a Milwaukii judge granted him five years‘ probation and a one year in the House of Correction “ under work release.“ Undetected, Dahmer had already killed five people at the time of his trial. While on probation, he proceeded to kill 12 more.
Reminds you of Eliza Fletcher of Memphis.
And Child Molestation needs to be more specific. RAPE IS RAPE NO MATTER THE AGE OR GENDER.
Chronic violent criminals neither deserve probation nor parole. If we take hundreds of thousands of additional criminals off our streets. And studies confirm that the cost of a new prison is more than offset by the savings from millions of new crimes that are prevented.
The Penal Farm in Memphis is an 11-month 29 29-day facility, and serve time is 90 days for multiple Recidivists, many up to 60+ times. DUIs are served on the weekends, no matter how many times they are DRUNK DRIVERS.
No wonder we fear going into these Deep Blue areas unarmed. They are now invading Tipton County. We don’t need Red Flag Laws, we need prevention IN THE FORM OF PRISONS, EXECUTIONS IN A TIMELY MANNER, and JUSTICE. WE WILL SEE NO PEACE TILL THEN. Grief lasts a LIFETIME. 200 drugs cause suicidal or homicidal thoughts, how do you monitor everyone who takes an Advil?
AND DEATH ROW INMATES DON’T NEED LAPTOPS WE CAN’T AFFORD FOR OUR CHILDREN, OR COLLEGE EDUCATIONS.
email to my TN reps. considering red flag laws.
Shouldn't, because most cars are capable of being driven, even if the fob's battery dies. In fact, most cars can start with a dead fob by placing the fob in a particular spot on the dash. This is something everyone should know how to do just in case. However, if you power the car off, and jump out and run away, the car can't be restarted if you have the fob with you.
He tryina trick people with that White boy name.

Eat your heart out Joe Mannix!
I have one of those. It does come with a key that slides out of the fob and opens the driver side door. That’s the only door fitted with a key receptacle.
My truck before was a 2014 F150 and I'd never had a flat tire (that I had to change) till the first of this year. I hadda go on utube on my smart phone to figure out sticking the rod in the hole in the bumper and lowering the tire....... Nobody tells me nuthin'
I've had an aftermarket stereo for decades that I'd move from one used pickup to another old used pickup when I'd replace my pickup on average every 7 years. Usually I'd keep the same stereo and speakers for 2 or 3 trucks before the stereo would break and need replacing. So I'm used to the new stereos. For years I'd bluetooth my phone to the stereo (once it's set up once I rarely have to tell it to connect later), simply get into my truck crank it up, and after a few seconds to let the phone have time to automatically connect to the stereo, say to my phone "Hey, Siri. Play Stick to Jesus playlist on shuffle." Then I'd be listening to music encouraging me to keep trusting Jesus, over half of it with a rock n' roll bent and much of it from decades ago. LOL
I still have that stereo in an old used truck. But now my wife and I do most of our driving in our new EV: 2022 Hyundai Ioniq 5. Same thing, except instead of bluetoothing to the stereo I simply plug a USB cable from my phone to the car. It has a much cleaner sound than the bluetooth protocol, though admittedly the factory stereo isn't as loud as I'd like when listening to songs like White Heart's Let the Kingdom Come. LOL
