The serial child killer Lucy Letby was convicted of murdering seven babies and attempting to kill another six on Friday, making her Britain’s worst child murderer.
After being handed a whole life term without the possibility of parole on Monday, the debate around the death penalty has re-emerged.
Reader TR says: “Back when it was abolished, the public were assured a life sentence would be for life. The guilty party would spend the remainder of their days in a cell we were promised by the abolitionists. How long did their promise last?
“It is the ultimate act of justice and it should be applied to child killers.”
Other readers, such as Michael OSullivan, argue that “the death penalty should be on the statute book for very few crimes”.
“It is the ultimate act of justice and yes, retribution, and it should be applied to child killers,” he says.
“Retribution and justice for the murdered and their families seems to be all but forgotten in this country, with more attention paid to the murderers.”
Reader Paul Anderson shares a similar view: “If fifty per cent of a jury feel a crime is so well proven and so heinous they should have the ability to call for a death sentence.”
While A.B is in favour of the death penalty, they stipulate that “the level of evidence must be even higher than what’s needed for a conviction. The evidence must be overwhelming such as CCTV of the incident”.
They give the example of Lee Rigby “who was hacked to death in the street in broad daylight. There was zero doubt who the killers were and should be hanged”.

The UK is debating it and over half the population are in favour. The politicians will follow.
UK is out of the EU now so not bound by "human rights" laws that prevented the death pen.
Bring back the Guillotine! Or just let the maniacal mob club her to death with baseball bats. Either way is fine by me.
The death penalty is unjust double jeopardy, Jesus already having died for all of the egregious crimes and unconscionable acts of all mankind (1 John 2:2) and is useful only to assuage the bloodthirstiness of the angry mob..
Let the nastygrams and flaming begin.
Why just child killers ?
What does that mean ?
My agreement with your first sentence
It should be applied to all cases of murder, rapists, torture/mutilation, regardless of the victims age.
God established the death penalty Himself. He sees no contradiction there.
And it’s not about revenge. It’s about justice and protecting society from repeat offenders.
As far as the forgiveness angle, that’s between the perp and victim’s family and should have no bearing on the ultimate meting out of true justice. Otherwise, your concept of *mercy* would free murderers to murder yet again. Nor should society be saddled with supporting the murderer for life in prison.
She’s killed enough babies. She needs to be stopped, permanently.
All who accept His sacrifice and acknowledge Him as Savior.
I recall reading once, that the death penalty, on average, saves seven lives for every execution. Executing one murderer saves seven innocent lives.
We have numerous cases of convicted murderers being released, and killing again. Especially those convicted of 2nd degree murder, often in a plea deal, who are released in their forties, and who go out and kill again. Very, very common.
I can live without the death penalty, provided the alternative makes the criminal WISH for death.
See mt FReeper profile for a suggested alternative.
You’re living under the Old Covenant of the law which was done away at the cross of Christ (Heb. 8:7, 13), replaced by the New Covenant of grace (Heb. 8:8-12), of which you seem to hold yourself out to be some kind of minister.
I have no problem with the concept of a state imposed death penalty.
However, given the high level of corruption and incompetency of government officials, I am fine with banning the implementation of state imposed death penalties.
Great point! The corrupt rot within the government is so pervasive now, the stink covers the planet.
That’s the real climate emergency.
A careful reading of the NT shows Jesus died for the sins of the whole world before anyone believed in him.
Civil society must deal with miscreants up to keeping unrepentant dangerous behind bars in protection of society. But the death penalty is not now in the “justice” equation. It is only in the unjust “vengeance” equation.

Jesus died for all sins for which Almighty God’s penalty is death.
“every single jot and tittle”, or do you dispute Jesus’ words?
Thus by your thinking, in contravention to Jesus, only “egregious” crimes deserve God’s capital judgement.
UNLESS you are an illegal alien then the liberals will just let you roam free.
Not just the killers.
Severe child abuseRs should pay the ultimate price.
