There were brush fires all over the leeward sides of the entire chain last week. Most were in remote areas. It happens literally every year, but rarely reaches residential areas.
The palm trees in particular are like big sponges. A live palm tree would take much longer to burn down than vehicles with encased gas tanks. The melted building everyone points out likely had wood siding and flammable roofing.

I drove through the fields coming down from Haleakala trying to get to Wialea.
When did they stop growing sugar cane and pineapples on Maui?
What was the reason they stopped?
