My story of what happened:
The Strange Maui Fires
A friend called me early on the morning of Tuesday, August 8th and told me he had a strong urge to visit Lahaina that day. Tempting me with lunch at Cool Cats, one of my favorite eateries in Old Lahaina, I said “Okay. Let’s go!”
The 30 minute drive was without incident, without winds, and without any warning advisories. As soon as we reached Lahaina, all power got zapped. Cell phone, internet, traffic lights, GPS, the 911 emergency system (which is never supposed to go down) and the power outage caused every store and shopping mall to immediately close. Nothing was open

Laihaina’s shops and smaller hotels were mostly owned by locals. Many were the descendants of the poor imports brought in to work on the sugar cane plantations in the 1700s and 1800s. There were more Asains there than any other ethnic group.
The thing I noticed about Lahaina when I was there 23 years ago was that it was kinda dingy and a dump once you got off of Front Street. A lot of the houses were tin roofed shacks.
Shacks that were now worth over a million dollars.

There is the strategy adopted in California to shut off power in hazardous areas in the event of high winds. This looks good on the surface but what happens when fire crews can't get water to put out the fires when the power to water pumps is cut off?

Her description sounds..... odd
That is a very good question. I don't know the answer. There is also the question about elderly and disabled residents who rely on power for medical equipment, but one would hope they have a backup power source but a sudden and unwarned power outage in the middle of the night would still be a problem.
ah ha, a Dallas demon-crrat
I would think that before the power shut down procedure was set, that all those who used life saving medical equipment would be prepared with automatic power generators. Of course, the way the Leftnics run things in the Hawaiian Islands, those needing medical equipment would be on their own on how to prepare.
Exactly! The power outage was so strong it knocked out the satellites in geosynchronous orbit.
True perhaps but for those subsisting on Medicare or Medicaid, I don’t think the cost of automatic power generators is covered and they are, as I understand, can be quite expensive and probably out of reach for many.
It is also my understanding that the fires started late at night and spread very rapidly because of the high winds.
Sort of a catch-22 - cut off the power as soon as possible after the winds reach a certain speed likely to cause sparking powerlines or wait and give it more time to try to notify people who were likely asleep. Sound the sirens that many might have thought a tsunami warning and confused on where to go?
I don’t know if the extent of high winds were anticipated ahead of time, if so the authorities and the power company could have given advanced warning of the power being cut off?
The cultural cost of two generations of recreational drug use.
With the advances in meteorological forecasting, you would think there was advance information to give early warnings on the news and direct cell phone contacts. I’m not certain if there was any weather information to cause warnings.
In Texas, tornado sirens were installed (and tested monthly) to ensure that warning would be given even if at night.
Not saying that folks who have a siren installed on their block aren’t aggravated when the sirens go off on Testing Tuesday but when that first 100 mph wind comes coursing through the neighborhood, they start to put up with it.
It is still a battle with false weather alarms but it settles down once a real tornado passes nearby.
At least it’s more plausible than the kooks saying it was a Directed Energy Weapon.
It’s a decent start. Then it devolves into some kind of DARPA conspiracy theory.
IPhones use satellite information. Not just cellular.
There is something to what you are saying.
It seems lately that, more often than not, the “conspiracy theory” proves to be the truth.

They still grow some other crops there, but I imagine it is scaled back quite a bit.
What a trip, man!
“This was not just a random act of mother nature. It reminded me of the strange fires in Paradise, California a few years back which swept through and wiped it off the map. Their only crime was getting in the way of a high speed railway project slated to come through the town.”
Paradise, CA is in the middle of nowhere, north of Sacramento. The notion that it was in the way of a high speed railway project is ludicrous.
Well these are the people that keep voting for Crazy Mazie, after all.
