Lucas Glover is probably the only FedEx Cup title contender doing his own laundry

MEMPHIS — Lucas Glover usually likes to unwind at night on the road with a good book, but after his second-round 64 propelled him into the lead on Friday at the FedEx St. Jude Championship, he capped off the evening in style. Well, he had style in mind. He did his laundry.

The PGA Tour offers laundry service to its players, who certainly needed it after two mud-splattering days at TPC Southwind. But Glover, 43, is a do-it-yourself kind of guy. Plus, it’s not like it made a dent in his finances after earning slightly more than $2.5 million thus far in the current season.

“Hey, three bucks a load. That’s not bad,” said the affable veteran, who did two loads.

Of course, in a hotel laundry room, you need quarters. Picture arguably the hottest player on tour rummaging around for the requisite number of coins. That’s 12 per load for the mathematically challenged. “I had to get change from the front. Dug through the backpack and then change from the front,” he said in a rather matter-of-fact manner.

Glover admitted that he packed only for this week, bringing the same clothes he wore while winning last week’s Wyndham Championship. It wasn’t that he lacked confidence that he could play well enough to advance to the second FedEx Cup Playoff event, the BMW Championship, near Chicago. That’s just his sartorial game plan.

“I pack for one week and then wash,” said the South Carolina native, who leads Taylor Moore by one stroke through 54 holes at TPC Southwind.

Plus, the married father of two had nothing better to do on a Friday night. “I'm very bored in my hotel room," he said. "Finished my book [a Daniel Silva novel], so I needed something to do.”

There was no telling what he had planned for Saturday night. But it wasn’t going to be spent washing, drying and folding. “No, no laundry tonight. I'm thinking some white joggers maybe for tomorrow,” he said with a grin.

He was kidding. Earlier in the day he had bragged about how well his tan slacks had come out of the washer. Those were likely to be part of his go-to ensemble for Sunday’s final round. He wore gray slacks last week, though, during his triumph in Greensboro, N.C., so, clearly, the man is not superstitious.

As a golf fan, I’m loving seeing Glover winning and back in contention. Yes he won The US Open in 2008, but since then he has been in the golf wilderness. Now with a new putter he’s back in it again. Gives us old duffers hope. I hope he wins today.

And he reads Daniel Silva?! I'm liking him more.

Hilarious interview of McCord by Feherty, including plenty on the Scottsdale golf scene..

I had an acquaintance a few years ago that bounced on and off the bottom of the qualified PGA Tour players. He lived the dream life of every bachelor. Made ~$600,000 a year. His home had a three car attached garage. The entire floor was covered with bags of golf clubs. He let both my kids go in and pick a bag, including a card for a pro to fit them. Manufacturers want people to see pros playing with their clubs. New sets came his way nearly every week.

Was an interesting glimpse inside the lifestyle.

Fabulous story within about McCord inviting Feherty into the tower and Director Chirkinians vehement refusal.

“NO,NO, NO...DON’T PUT THAT CRAZY IRISHMAN ON THE AIR, UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES.”

McCord: “OK, we’re in.”

Side note: I once had a pre-production meeting with Chirkinian at the AZ Biltmore—from which—he was directing a live, on air tennis tournament from the comfort of his suite.

“Ready one, take one. Ready 2, take 2.” Not much to that one.

Further, we masterminded a :30 TV commercial, which Frank directed, resulting in a :38 second commercial, which had to be mangled down to :33 and run from the tournament site trailer because NY can’t handle :33 second commercials.

My first exposure to network TV exposed how the big guys, too, are run by the seat of their pants

By winning last week he has an exemption for 2024 and 2025, so this week is all gravy.

THAT CRAZY IRISHMAN

Wasn't aware that Armenians cared about anyone other than Turks.

Keeping his tour card for two years is excellent but being in the top 50 brings guaranteed big money in no-cut events.

I never liked no-cut events and still do not. I hope this year’s scheme only lasts one year.

The cut-down in the playoff events is from 70 - this week - to 50 - next week to 30 for the championship. Glover is already in for next week and probably for the following too. Big bucks.

Playoff! FWIW, Cantlay is deadly with the putter.

Wow - Lucas just kissed his wife (the woman who stabbed him for missing a cut). No way he loses now.

I’d guess. He refused to press charges and she was placed on 12 months probation. This was a couple of years ago.
