MEMPHIS — Lucas Glover usually likes to unwind at night on the road with a good book, but after his second-round 64 propelled him into the lead on Friday at the FedEx St. Jude Championship, he capped off the evening in style. Well, he had style in mind. He did his laundry.
The PGA Tour offers laundry service to its players, who certainly needed it after two mud-splattering days at TPC Southwind. But Glover, 43, is a do-it-yourself kind of guy. Plus, it’s not like it made a dent in his finances after earning slightly more than $2.5 million thus far in the current season.
“Hey, three bucks a load. That’s not bad,” said the affable veteran, who did two loads.
Of course, in a hotel laundry room, you need quarters. Picture arguably the hottest player on tour rummaging around for the requisite number of coins. That’s 12 per load for the mathematically challenged. “I had to get change from the front. Dug through the backpack and then change from the front,” he said in a rather matter-of-fact manner.
Glover admitted that he packed only for this week, bringing the same clothes he wore while winning last week’s Wyndham Championship. It wasn’t that he lacked confidence that he could play well enough to advance to the second FedEx Cup Playoff event, the BMW Championship, near Chicago. That’s just his sartorial game plan.
“I pack for one week and then wash,” said the South Carolina native, who leads Taylor Moore by one stroke through 54 holes at TPC Southwind.
Plus, the married father of two had nothing better to do on a Friday night. “I'm very bored in my hotel room," he said. "Finished my book [a Daniel Silva novel], so I needed something to do.”
There was no telling what he had planned for Saturday night. But it wasn’t going to be spent washing, drying and folding. “No, no laundry tonight. I'm thinking some white joggers maybe for tomorrow,” he said with a grin.
He was kidding. Earlier in the day he had bragged about how well his tan slacks had come out of the washer. Those were likely to be part of his go-to ensemble for Sunday’s final round. He wore gray slacks last week, though, during his triumph in Greensboro, N.C., so, clearly, the man is not superstitious.

Will really be pulling for Lucas again today. He's been through a lot and just worked through it all to get back on top. To think he'd be where he is now as little as 2 months ago wouldn't be believed. Yet here he is.
Great story. Except for the hunt for a zillion quarters, doing laundry is one of those low stress, quiet, reflective chores. Glover is a champ.
Sweet! Some years ago having just won the US Open, my then 19 year old son and I were in a local Greenville, SC eatery when Lucas Glover came in, ordered his food, and sat down behind us. I said to my son that gentleman there just won the US Open. He couldn’t believe it and was beside himself with excitement that a US Open champion was sitting right behind him. He got to shake his hand and congratulated Lucas, a down-to-earth, ordinary, friendly Greenville native. It was a memorable moment for us.
The last time I talked to Lucas he was just getting used to the new putter and I could tell he wasn't as dejected as he was early in the season.
I admire the guy. He seems at peace finally. Do we know if he’s still with his wife who at center of some issues a few years back. As I remember, she expected to live the life of a champion after his 2009 major, but the putter went cold...as did the cash flow.
Ill bet that pressure to provide contributed to the yips.
Insight appreciated. Confirms suspicions.
Are all of you down in the conclaves north of PB..Jupiter area ?....or still back upstate Carolina ? Eric, too. Seems like a good man....another one I'm happy to see do well.
Jupiter/Tequesta - where they all live.
Cam needs to take better care of the staff, I’ll leave it at that.
Eric Cole is a fantastic guy and just bought a house on the 12th fairway. Look forward to hopefully meeting his Mom some day.
Russ Cochran, Justin Leonard, Nick Hardy, Calc, Daniel Berger, Ryan Armour, Steve Marino, Shane Lowry - all great. Only see Rickie when we have junior golf clinics. Only see Tiger/Elin as spectators for Charlie. Russ and Justin are the best to talk to. Justin’s kid Luke lost the junior club championship shooting 70 from the whites. Charlie won w/ a 65. Both will be on the same HS team this fall.
You’re in the middle of one enclave...the other is out here in Phoenix/Scottsdale with PING/PXG/ASU/WhisperRock/Rahm/Finau/McCord et. al.
Most fly under radar out here.
Back to Lucas - I want him to win out, then decline a Ryder Cup invitation (which he wouldn’t do). I worry that what was once a friendly exhibition and has become a ridiculous spectacle would expose his putting. It doesn’t go away. It never goes away.
Pulling for Lucas because he seems like a great guy. Also, I bet $5.00 on him to win outright. $405 payout. Go Lucas!
Glover is a great person personally and professionally. I am pulling for the former Clemson Tiger to pull it out, but I am not hopeful. Hil putting looked a little shaky yesterday.
His bio on PGA only lists his children as family…
Evidence is mounting that this may not be true. Long putters Langer, Adam Scott, and Lucas are the most recent and prominent examples, although Lucas attributes it to conquering mental blocks as much as equipment. I don't see him losing it as before. Today's performance may shed some light.
These international team competitions are compelling, despite the hypes.
I was on staff for the Solheim Cups in Orlando, Scotland, and then at the Greenbriar. Good, fun competitions.
She wasn’t present, apparently, last week, but was referenced once.
I will also be pulling for Lucas. Even if he does not win today, he is having an amazing period of time in golf after a very long drought. If he makes it into the top 50 FedEx cup, he will be set for at least the next year.
2 things we don’t discuss at the club - Lucas’ wife and Steve Marino’s flight from Japan on Ernie’s jet.
but can you answer this: are they still married, living together or apart ?
Throw in the Marino story while you’re at it here on FR.
Love Ernie, and I've been to his old house (now Rory's house) a few times. He can drink a case of Heineken w/out taking a piss if he has to. And I'm not exaggerating.
