Ukrainian troops suffer heavy losses - New York Times
“American journalists spent some time in several Ukrainian brigades formed for the counteroffensive and trained in Western countries.
They note that a number of commanders are from English-speaking countries, and one of the brigades has an evangelist chaplain. All military personnel complain about heavy losses in the brigades. Before the start of the counteroffensive, they expected an easy victory, but immediately got stuck in positional battles with the RF Armed Forces, which were located in well-prepared positions. A lot of soldiers die in minefields. Some commanders are no strangers to losses - during the war they saw how entire units ceased to exist.
One of the battalion commanders, a participant in last year’s battles for Kherson, updated his battalion three times. The soldiers criticize the command for constantly urging them on. Many are dissatisfied with training in Western countries, as well as with some samples of Western military equipment - for example, MaxxPro armored cars, which were made to fight insurgents and were not ready to face the firepower of Russian troops.”
