The Irish in Jamaica were there as labor more than overseer or slave owner. Cromwell sent some 2,000 Irish children to Jamaica as slaves in 1656. Adult Irish were later sent as indentured laborers. Cromwell had a system called the Western Design.

Hamilton Brown, never married but produced at least six mulatto children. He came to Jamaica with his uncle from Tullyloob, County Down in Ireland and became first a clerk for a law firm, and then a land and slave owner; making him a rich man.
