Stores have gotten away in recent years, many years actually, with very little protection against shoplifting or looting.
It has been cheaper for them to minimize their number employees and let a little theft occur.
We still live in a relatively "high trust" society, although by comparing it to 50+ years ago, you can see the trend, and how we have steadily declined. The coming commercial real-estate crisis, recession and Deep-state vote-rigging and control will knock us down yet another level. I believe in another 30 years, we will look like central America.
