Social Security and Medicare are programs that people have paid into during their working luves.

Medicare does not cover nursing home care. Medicaid covers it, but only for “indignant” people without assets. You are expected to spend down your assets until they are all gone, then Medicaid takes over. They will go after the estate if there’s anything there ( like a house).

Meanwhile elderly welfare recipients who never paid a dollar of taxes get care for free, as do illegal aliens.

Bingo! This is exactly right. There are basically three ways to pay for long term care:

Out of your pocket

Private long term care insurance

Medicaid (or VA benefits) - and one must qualify financially for this

“indignant” people without assets.

Yes. We have too many of those. :)

TRUTH.

My MIL is in an assisted living place and there are some ‘elderly welfare recipients’ who are demanding, mean and require more than anyone else for FREE. They don’t pay one red cent and are treated like kings.

My sister-in-law who has never earned 10 cents under life is in a nursing home in Tennessee on Medicaid. But the weird thing about it is I’m told that the people living there who are on their own dime are paying up to $8,000 a month. This is my question is which I cannot get an answer how is somebody who’s already on the government dole end up in an $8,000 a month nursing home? It is notable that these facts are coming from the family two steps back so I can’t vouch the accuracy.. but according to another sister-in-law it is a pretty nice nursing home.
