IAEA: Reactor 5 at Zaporizhzhia nuclear plant switched to cold shutdown
kyivindependent.com
Asami Terajima
July 29, 2023 9:11 p.m.
https://kyivindependent.com/iaea-3/

Reactor unit 5 at the Russian-occupied Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant (ZNPP) was successfully switched to cold shutdown status to conduct maintenance only possible in that state, Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Rafael Mariano Grossi said on July 29.

The IAEA reported that unit 5’s transfer into cold shutdown status – a mode in which it no longer produces electricity – was conducted on the morning of July 28, three days after unit 4 was brought to hot shutdown.

According to the IAEA, one of the six reactors at the plants needs to remain in a hot shutdown status to generate steam, which helps ensure nuclear safety at the Russian-occupied facility.

But to keep producing the steam required while having all units in a cold shutdown state, which helps minimize the risks of a man-made disaster, the IAEA has called on the management of the Russian-occupied nuclear plant to install an external boiler.

Ukraine has also been calling on the management of the Russian-occupied nuclear plant to switch all reactors into cold shutdown mode.

Nearly a year and a half since Russia swiftly occupied Europe’s largest nuclear plant situated in the southeastern Zaporizhzhia Oblast in March 2022, uncertainty about what Russia could do next at the plant remains.

The IAEA reported that the mines that they observed on 23 July at the plant’s perimeter were still in place on July 27, and the Russian side has not granted the agency access to the roofs and the turbine halls yet.

The IAEA also said that its on-the-ground team heard some detonations – both distant and apparently closer to the plant – over the last few days.

Ukraine raised fresh concerns of a potential accident at the plant in June, with top officials warning that Russia had rigged the plant with explosives and could launch a terrorist attack.

Since occupying the plant, Russia has used the Zaporizhzhia nuclear plant as a military base, placing troops and equipment there.

Ukraine’s HUR military intelligence reported earlier in July that Russia continues to mine the plant. According to the report, mines, and explosives continued to be delivered to the territory of the nuclear plant.

The IAEA staff has been based at the Zaporizhzhia plant on rotation since September 2022, after Grossi’s first visit to the occupied facility.

WSJ: Saudi Arabia to host Ukraine peace talks, without Russia, in August EXCERPT]
kyivindependent.com
Asami Terajima
July 29, 2023 10:56 p.m.
https://kyivindependent.com/wsj-saudi-arabia-to-host-ukraine-peace-talks-on-aug-5-6/

Mohammed bin Salman al-Saud, Crown Prince and Prime Minister of Saudi Arabia, arrives at the G20 summit on Nov. 25, 2022. Saudi Arabia is due to host peace talks on Aug. 5 and 6, inviting top officials from 30 countries, including India, Brazil, and Western nations, the Wall Street Journal reported on July 29, citing unnamed diplomats involved in the discussion.

Russia won’t be attending the summit, and China’s presence is unlikely, according to the report. U.S. National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan’s attendance is expected, a person familiar with the organization of the event told the WSJ. There was no confirmation yet from the National Security Council, it added.

Instead, the large-scale event is set to be held in the port city of Jeddah “to consolidate international support for Ukraine’s peace demands,” the WSJ said.

It’s not clear which countries will attend the summit yet. According to the WSJ, Saudi Arabia and Ukraine have chosen 30 invitees, which include Egypt, Mexico, Indonesia, Chile, and Zambia. Some countries, such as the U.K., South Africa, Poland, and the EU have already confirmed their attendance, it added.

Earlier in 2023, Saudi Arabia’s Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan visited Kyiv in February and announced $400 million in humanitarian aid.

Saudi Arabia has played an important role in negotiating prisoner exchanges with Russia, allowing Ukraine to achieve a major exchange involving nearly 300 people – including commanders who were trapped in the besieged Azovstal plant in Mariupol – in September 2022.

So I guess the Russians blowing up their own nuclear plant is on hold, pending future developments in the Ukraine “counter-offensive”.

Ukrainian Armed Forces announces successful strike on Chonhar Bridge
Ukrainska Pravda

The defense forces of Ukraine successfully struck the Chonhar Bridge on Saturday morning.

SOURCE: Department of Strategic Communications of Ukrainian Armed Forces (AFU), Telegram channel Crimean Wind

QUOTE from StratCom: “The defence forces of Ukraine have successfully launched a strike on the Chonhar Bridge on the morning of 29.07.2023.”

DETAILS: The Crimean Wind Telegram channel reports that information about the damage to the Chonhar Bridge “is confirmed by Russian tourists who went along the land corridor to Crimea for new experience.”
On the published screenshot, users write that the Chonhar bridge is blocked due to damage, and Russian invaders send cars to detour.

PREVIOUSLY: Earlier on Saturday, Volodymyr Saldo, a Russian collaborator and the Russian-appointed governor of the occupied part of Kherson Oblast, said that Ukraine’s defence forces attempted to destroy the railway between the Russian-occupied part of Kherson Oblast and Crimea.

BACKGROUND:
• On Thursday, 22 June, Russians reported an attack on a bridge on the administrative border between Kherson Oblast and Crimea near Chonhar.

• First, Nikolai Lukashenko, Kremlin-appointed so-called “minister of transport of Crimea”, said that it would take several weeks to restore the Chonhar Bridge fully. Later, Saldo said that the damage to the Chonhar Bridge caused by the attack turned out to be more serious, and the bridge will not be restored in 15-20 days.

• Because of this, the Russians said they suspended bus service between Crimea and the city of Henichesk, Kherson Oblast.

Who knows. Putin is getting a lot of feedback from China, Turkey, Saudi Arabia etc. Since occupying the plant, Russia has used the Zaporizhzhia nuclear plant as a military base, placing troops and equipment there.

IMO, he kind of painted himself into a corner now.
The best he can do is Russia continues to mine the plant & mine the fields surrounding for deniability if nuclear plant goes ‘boom.’

“Ben Hodges reports from Crimea on the largest military mobilization in Russian history”

Modern post-1991 Russian history probably. 1914 was the previous non-Soviet mobilisation, and it was @8-10 times as many men, at the start of WWI. The population and age structure of Russia (and all of Europe to be fair) does not permit such armies anymore.

Defense Ministry: Russian forces aim to maintain control over land corridor into occupied Crimea
kyivindependent.com
Alexander Khrebet
July 29, 2023 6:49 PM
https://kyivindependent.com/defense-ministry-russian-forces-aim-to-maintain-control-over-land-corridor-into-occupied-crimea/

Russian forces are focusing on maintaining control of the land corridor to occupied Crimea in Kherson and Zaporizhzhia oblasts, the Defense Ministry’s Military Media Center reported on July 29.

Russia occupied Crimea in 2014 and orchestrated pro-Moscow protests and the seizure of several cities in Donetsk Oblast, aiming to secure a land corridor that runs from Russia’s southwestern cities all the way to occupied Crimea.

Ukrainian military operations to liberate Mariupol and several other settlements in the south of Donetsk Oblast in the spring of 2014 dashed the Kremlin’s longing of establishing such a corridor for years.

When Russia unleashed its full-scale invasion in 2022, its forces occupied the southern parts of Kherson, Zaporizhzia, and Donetsk Oblast, including Mariupol, setting up the land corridor up to the occupied peninsula.

The Military Media Center also reported that Russian forces are striving to prevent attacks on their fleet and fortify Black Sea and Azov Sea naval bases.

Meanwhile, Ukrainian forces are conducting their summer counteroffensive in at least three directions, including two sectors in the southeast that could potentially cut off the land corridor to Crimea.

The bulk of the Ukrainian forces committed to the counteroffensive has been deployed southeast, two unnamed U.S. officials told CNN on July 27.

The report indicates that the counteroffensive has breached Russian defensive lines in the southeast, prompting the swift deployment of reserve units to seize the advantage.

On the same day, Ukraine’s military General Staff reported that Ukrainian forces are holding down their new positions in the southeast, in the Melitopol and Berdiansk directions, after making gains during the counteroffensive.

Agree.
IMO, he kind of painted himself into a corner now: internationally; politically; Kremlin forming alliances jockeying for power positions; militarily: best fighters are murderers, rapists, robbers and pedophiles; Russian ruble denied in major international banks now; & the Russian people are now voicing opposition.

Hello everyone from a new day of the confliction between Russia and Ukraine. I will try to convey the latest developments on the front line to you in a moment. We see that the Ukrainian army is beginning to bear the fruits of its long-standing struggle. In many of our previous reports, I have provided you with a lot of critical information about the operations of the Ukrainian army in and around Bakhmut.

Recent reports indicate that the Ukrainian army has gained significant successes around Bakhmut. So what’s the latest situation? If you are ready, let’s look together. I have been trying to draw your attention to the vicinity of Bakhmut in map reports for a long time. As you know, Bakhmut has been trying to be surrounded by Ukrainian Military Forces for a long time. Among the places where the most violent clashes took place in the region is Klishchiivka, located south of Bakhmut. I will try to evaluate the latest reports on the map.

Now on the map you can see Klishchiivka, which is located south of the city center of Bakhmut. The Ukrainian army had launched a double-front operation against the center of the region in recent days. The ongoing operations from the northwest and southwest direction have been going on for a long time.

Previously, the Ukrainian Armed Forces had managed to liberate the dominant hills from Russian control in this region you see on the map, that is, northwest of Klishchiivka. Having gained the dominant hill advantage, the Ukrainian Sialhli Forces had put the center of Klishchiivka, a lower area, under great pressure. According to the latest reports, the Ukrainian Armed Forces in this region, which I have shown, continue to dominate.

Moreover, the last remaining Russian trenches in this region also came under the domination of Ukraine along with the attacks of the Ukrainian army. However, this is not the most important point I will mention about the south of Bakhmut.

Saakashvili decides to help Ukrainian children
Ukrainska Pravda
KATERYNA TYSHCHENKO
Saturday, 29 July 2023, 20:13
https://www.pravda.com.ua/eng/news/2023/07/29/7413411/

Mikheil Saakashvili, the ex-president of Georgia, who is imprisoned in this country, and a citizen of Ukraine, has founded an initiative to help children who are in the occupied territories of Ukraine or have been abducted, as well as children of fallen Ukrainian servicemen.

Source: Saakashvili on Facebook

Quote: “We, together with Sofia Chkonia, decided to establish an international program/initiative for humanitarian and medical assistance for children – lost or those in the occupied territories of Ukraine, victims of abduction, [and] children of killed Ukrainian soldiers.
At least 15,000 Ukrainian children were abducted from the occupied territories of Ukraine, forcibly adopted into the families of the occupying country, and are in homes for homeless children. This war has already taken the lives of 535 children, many children lost parents, but their relatives and Ukraine as a state are looking for them.
Even for the severe state of my health, I’m deeply compassionate about the tragedy of the children, as a father and as a citizen of Ukraine.”

Details: Saakashvili noted that fashion expert Sofia Chkonia has extensive experience in humanitarian activities. He asked his supporters in Russia, Ukraine and Georgia to help gather information and return the children. He asks that all information be sent to: Forhelp114@gmail.com
The initiative will start working on 2 August.

BACKGROUND:
-In early July, Saakashvili took part in a court hearing for the first time since February through a video link from the Vivamed clinic. He looked extremely exhausted, which caused a wide response.

-After that, it became known that Polish doctors were allowed to visit Saakashvili after a six-month delay. However, the penitentiary service said that the Polish doctor tried to secretly take out samples of biological materials taken from the politician.

-The US State Department is closely monitoring the progress of the Saakashvili case in Georgia. A spokesman for the State Department said that the Georgian authorities are responsible for providing due medical assistance to Saakashvili.
