One of the favorite ways that charlatans use is to interpret scientific language in such a way as to make ordinary scientific research sound ominous and scary. The use of the term “gain-of-function” is one of these.
I have read the studies published by the Wuhan Institute of Virology. They did nothing that would have given a bat virus the ability to infect humans.
What they did was to take a human virus, exchange its spike protein for a bat spike protein, and see if it retained the ability to infect human cells. It did, so there is a possibility that the bat virus could infect human cells. Since the spike only enables the virus to enter the cell and there are other steps necessary for a virus to establish an infection, they did not show that the bat virus was capable of infecting human cells. But the fact that its spike protein can attach to human cells is quite concerning.
There are many coronaviruses circulating in animal populations. Without research, we cannot know which of them are capable of infecting humans.
As for the mention in the email at the link of a sequence that some scientists claimed could never have occurred naturally because they’ve never seen it in a bat virus before, that is actually false. The sequence in question has been observed in several other coronaviruses. The fact that it had not previously been seen in a bat coronavirus is because not all bat coronaviruses have been sequenced. There are countless microorganisms in the world that we do not yet know about.
When a nucleic acid sequence is altered through human action, that alteration is evident to any scientist who is knowledgeable about molecular biology. Given that tens of thousands of scientists all over the world have examined the sequence of SARS-CoV-2 and no one has seen signs of genetic alteration, the overwhelming evidence is that SARS-CoV-2 arose naturally in bats and made its way into humans.
