In Germany, von Braun had been nominally Lutheran but functionally atheist. He had no interest in religion or God. In Texas, while living at Fort Bliss, a neighbor invited him to church. He went, expecting to find the religious equivalent of a country club. Instead, he found a small white frame building with a vibrant congregation of people who loved the Lord. He realized that he had been morally adrift and that he needed to surrender himself to God. He converted to Christ and, over the coming years, became quite outspoken in his evangelical faith and frequently addressed the complementarity of faith and science.

He was a German, but not a Nazi.

No one can (or in von Braun’s case, could) peer into the heart of another person. But even if Wernher von Braun was a full blown Nazi - and he truly repented, I have no doubt that the blood of the Lord Jesus has the power to forgive and cleanse even that foul of a heart. No one knows for sure right now - but one day everyone will know. I for one hope it is true.

Anyone can convert their religion, even people who don’t believe in the religion they are converting to.

Vin Braun was an apolitical rocketeer from his youth.

The Pre-Nazi German government noticed his group and began to fund them. The Nazis were the subsequent government.

He made sure he surrendered to Americans, not Soviets.

Leftists always smear him.

My wife’s uncle was a young American who worked for von Braun in Huntsville, Alabama. He told the story that the chain of command always kept a Jewish American one or two levels above von Braun. It caused considerable consternation that von Braun had to report to a Jew. Just a reminder of who won the war.

His rocket motor design is still used for heavy lift, liquid fueled rockets.

At Rocketdyne in West Palm Beach FLA, he’s still a minor god.
