Secret Service has primary jurisdiction on a number of crimes (besides counterfeiting, which everyone knows thanks to Hollywood), like credit card fraud, and telecommunications or computer fraud.
Since she made a fraudulent report to the police via telephone, that probably was enough to get them involved.
Possibly as an exercise as part of the investigation. Hoover PD has a major cyber crime education facility that trains federal, county, and municipal departments from all over. I think they evem boast some friendly foreign departments as well. just a guess.
