Sinead O’Connor dead: Irish music legend dies aged 56 after years of mental health battles – and 18 months after her 17-year-old son Shane also passed away

Sinead O'Connor has died at the age of 56 after years of mental health battles, her 'devastated' family confirmed.

The Irish singer shot to stardom across the world in 1990 by her heartrending cover of Prince's Nothing Compares 2 U.

It comes a year after the mother-of-four's son Shane, 17, took his life in January 2022 after escaping hospital while on suicide watch.

At the time of her death, the musician, who changed her name to Shuhada' Sadaqat in 2018 when she converted to Islam, was thought to be spending her time between Co Roscommon, Ireland, and London.

In her last Tweet, O'Connor posted a photo of Shane and said: 'Been living as undead night creature since. He was the love of my life, the lamp of my soul.

'We were one soul in two halves. He was the only person who ever loved me unconditionally.

'I am lost in the bardo without him.'

The mother-of-four also posted a series of Spotify links to relatively sad and heart breaking songs, including one she dedicated to 'all mothers of Suicided children'.

In a statement, O'Connor's family said: 'It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved Sinéad.

'Her family and friends are devastated and have requested privacy at this very difficult time.'

Here is the answer — She was pretty banged up, physically and mentally.

She was a gifted singer but a complete c-

4 kids by 4 different husbands.

That said her son committed suicide and I don’t wish that on my worst enemy.

It was such a sacrilege against a Pope who had survived an assassination attempt and was deeply anti-communist -whom we were deployed to defend against. I wasn’t the only one who was P.O.d at the nutcase. Nuts and evil are frequent fellow travelers.

Losing a child by suicide would completely destroy me.. I think it destroyed her... sad

I lost a daughter a couple years ago to COVID, and I can say that it is indeed the most painful experience I have ever had. I certainly have a great deal of sympathy for O'Connor, having lost her son such a short time ago.

For me, though, having an enduring faith through Christ, and belonging to the Catholic Church, I was warmly embraced by so many, and found comfort in the words of the Lord. While I continue to suffer many moments of isolation and sadness, I know that I am loved, not only here on earth, but by my creator.

I am struck by how religion did not give O'Connor any peace, though she clearly had a yearning. All I can say is that she is with God, now, and may He hold her warmly in His loving arms.

She was protesting the abuse of children by the Catholic Church in Ireland and the cover up of that abuse. She was right.

Wiki:”The single “Mandinka” was a big college radio hit in the United States... In her first US network television appearance, O’Connor sang “Mandinka” on Late Night with David Letterman in 1988.”

If she tore a picture of Bergoglio, I would have cheered.

My only son died 5 weeks ago, thanks to a combination of failed anti-depressants and alcohol which put him in a dark place. I still can’t believe it and I understand well the heartache Sinead was feeling.

I’m not suicidal, thanks to the love and support of my 2 daughters, husband, and 3 grandchildren, but all the plans I had for the remainder of my life now seem silly and frivolous. For the first time in my adult, I welcome death, if only to see my beloved son again.

So very sorry for you. By all means—lean on family/loved ones, good faith friends, sympathetic colleagues. You will make it through this, Prince.

I’m so very sorry for your loss..

I can’t imagine what it must be like to deal with.

I’m certain that the dead still exist, I know that I will someday be reunited with loved ones that I have lost.

May God bless you and keep you my FRiend :-)

That’s when I became a fan of hers. She was intense and spectacular.

Listening to her song Troy now.

As a mom, I can certainly knock her for that lousy post where she claimed only the one child that died ever loved her unconditionally.

Unless there is something seriously wrong, all children want to love their parents unconditionally. If you treat them lovingly and fairly, by and large most will continue to love you unconditionally. They may not like you, at times they may even claim to hate you, but they will still love you.

I think this comment by her was very telling and particularly cruel.

I’ve heard of her all my last few decades, yet suddenly realize I have never heard a song she has sung.

Same for other Rock and Rollers of the last 58 years.

Agreed. Pure artists. I also toss Paula Cole in there. She really is special with him. She kinda achieves what “The Langley Sisters” do for Jeff Lynn and ELO.
